2020 John W. Brick Mental Health Foundation 5K & 1-Mile Family Fun Run/Walk *POSTPONED TO 2021*

POSTPONED TO 2021 - JWB MENTAL HEALTH FOUNDATION BALTIMORE 5K AND FAMILY FUN RUN AND JWB GLOBAL 5K

Thank you so much for your continued patience and support as we navigate the changing landscape due to COVID-19. We have been working closely with our partners to deliver an amazing experience for runners at our Baltimore race, and virtual runners around the world. Unfortunately, that experience will have to wait a little longer. Due to the many unknowns still present, Towson University has officially cancelled all special events taking place on campus for the remainder of 2020. While the option to transition to a fully virtual race was explored, we came to the conclusion that the positivity and power of this event comes largely from the ability to gather together in our local community. The John W. Brick Mental Health Foundation Baltimore 5k and Family Fun Run & JWB Global 5k will be rescheduled for the spring of 2021.

Your support is needed now more than ever, and we are working with Towson University to identify a new race date in 2021. Current registrants will be notified when the new date has been set, and entries will be automatically transferred. Your words of encouragement and support have meant the world to us during this difficult time, and we look forward to coming together next year to help people live happier, healthier lives!

On Sunday, November 1st, 2020 – YOU, can take the lead for mental health!

The 4th Annual John W. Brick Mental Health Foundation Baltimore 5K and 1-mile Family Fun Run/Walk will follow a beautiful course on the wooded campus of Towson University in Baltimore, Maryland - starting from Towson's first-rate Johnny Unitas Stadium.

In addition to the Baltimore 5K, thousands from around the world will join in a Global 5K on their own local track, trail, or treadmill.

Did you know that in the U. S. approximately 1 in 5 adults, and 1 in 6 youth aged six to seventeen, experience a mental illness every year? Suicide is now the second leading cause of death among people age 10 - 34. And, other than pregnancy, mood disorders are the most common cause of hospitalization for all people in the U.S. under age 45. Nearly every person reading this either has themselves or has a loved one who has struggled with mental illness.

We all know that mental and emotional well-being are boosted by exercise and fitness, nutrition and healthy eating, and mind-body practices - but the vast majority of people seeking help for mental illness won’t be offered these as part of their treatment.  It’s time to expand our approaches to address the whole person - body, mind and spirit.

Our foundation funds and promotes evidence-based research on how different forms of holistic treatments - such as exercise, nutrition, and healthy lifestyle choices - benefit mental health. We also bring fitness centers into mental health care facilities.

Every dollar we raise at the John W. Brick Foundation 5K and 1-Mile Family Fun Run/Walk will go to support research and programs for transforming our approach to preventing and treating mental illness. Our goal is to change the way we treat mental health.

And you can help! Run. Walk. Donate. Raise Funds. However you choose to participate will help make the world a brighter place for millions of people.

BENEFICIARY

The John W. Brick Mental Health Foundation was founded by Victor and Lynne Brick in honor of Victor's oldest brother John, who suffered from schizophrenia his entire life and died of complications from the disease. Never, in all the years he received treatment for his illness, often in some of the finest mental health institutions in the country, was he put on a well-rounded program that included lifestyle choices, such as exercise, diet, or mind-body wellness, to help improve his condition.

From Victor and Lynne: “We want to help people like my brother John. We want to save families from going through the heartache we experienced. We don’t think exercise is the only answer, but we think it is part of the answer. Through evidence-based research it is our hope to find out what part exercise can play in the treatment of mental illness, and what forms of exercise work best for different mental health issues.”
