The Law Enforcement Torch Run has been one of the largest fundraising events for Special Olympics for nearly 40 years. This event began in 1981 in Wichita, Kansas as a way to get the local police involved in something within the community. Since this event began in Kansas it has expanded not only locally, but nationally, and now is a worldwide event hosted each year. Since the start of Law Enforcement’s commitment to Special Olympics, the Torch Run has grown extensively with over 97,000 law enforcement volunteers spanning 46 countries and raising more than $674 million for the Special Olympics movement.
Law Enforcement Officers are known as Guardians of the Flame, law enforcement members and Special Olympics athletes carry the “Flame of Hope” into Opening Ceremonies of local competitions. They also carry it into Special Olympics State, Provincial, National, Regional, and World Games. These Law Enforcement Officers carry the “Flame of Hope” annually. The flame symbolizes the courage and celebration of diversity uniting communities around the globe. This event has become a way to include and accept all members of the community, which has opened doors for Law Enforcement members to get involved with numerous fundraising opportunities with Special Olympics.
As shown in various campaigns with Special Olympics Maryland, the relationship between Law Enforcement and our athletes isn’t just one event. It has become a year-round inclusion experience that brings athletes and the community together in hopes to create an atmosphere that supports inclusion for all.
Beginning the week of October 12th, runners across the state will keep the Flame of Hope burning by running, walking, and biking in their communities with a goal of completing a total of 2,020 miles for the year 2020! Help us reach our goal of $50,000 raised in support of the 8,716 Special Olympics Maryland athletes across the state of Maryland. Fundraising is encouraged but not required!
