THE STORY
Johnny Gregorek, an ASICS elite athlete and American middle-distance runner, is the second fastest American to run the mile. But one of his more recent accomplishments and a unique record – the fastest to run a mile in blue jeans - holds a special place in his record books.
In May 2020, Johnny set out to break the world record for the Blue Jean Mile in honor of his brother, Patrick, who lost his battle with mental illness at just 21-years-old in 2019.
Paddy, as he was affectionately referred to by his family, enjoyed running for the fun of it, as Johnny had early on. And Johnny felt Paddy would have enjoyed watching him try to run the mile as fast as possible in a pair of blue jeans.
HOW WE CAN HELP
ASICS, a brand built on the ethos of SOUND MIND, SOUND BODY™, has been inspired by Johnny’s advocacy work around mental health and his use of his platform to educate people on mental illness.
Please join Charm City Run and ASICS for one of our own Blue Jean Mile Runs to support the National Alliance on Mental Illness Maryland and Delaware. Wear your blue jeans and we'll run a mile together then enjoy drinks and snacks. We'll also be offering a special discount and ASICS gift with purchase. Plus, ASICS will donate $5 for every pair of ASICS shoes purchased May 17 and Charm City Run will match to go to the National Alliance for Mental Illness Maryland and Delaware.
