TasteWise Recipes in Honor of Women's History Month (and St. Patrick's Day!)

Last year, our Live. Give. Run. Foundation began partnering with a local Baltimore non-profit called TasteWise Kids. Their mission is to empower children of all ages to think about food in new ways, to explore their own sense of taste, and to realize that flavorful, nutritious food and good health go together. Through engaging programming with a fun, interdisciplinary approach, TasteWise Kids is working to foster healthy eating habits among young people, regardless of background, so they may learn to make better food choices into adulthood.

Two of Live. Give. Run.’s core goals are to support our youth and to encourage people of all ages to lead healthy lifestyles - this is why we’re so excited about what TasteWise Kids is doing.

To celebrate Women’s History Month, we wanted to share what the team of women who lead TasteWise Kids are doing! They have gathered special recipes passed down from woman to woman in an effort to grow the connections between women, food, and each other.

We encourage all our Charm City Run women to learn and cook one of these recipes with a girl or woman in your life, or to send us something your learned from an awesome lady! TasteWise Kids Executive Director Wendy Jeffries has shared the first recipe: a now three generations old recipe for Irish Soda Bread (perfect for getting ready for the Under Armour Kelly Benefits St. Patrick’s Day Shamrock 5K!). Funny enough this particular recipe all starts with an Italian grandmother who knew nothing about Irish cooking, but with love and determination this delectable St. Patrick's Day treat came to be. Check out the recipe here!

The Benefits of Keeping Kids Active

The Benefits of Keeping Kids Active

As a parent, teacher, coach or role model, the most important step is creating a positive environment that focuses on fun and building the basic movement skills before sport specific skills. Since not all kids are innately active creatures, some need more encouragement than others to get up and get moving. Increasing physical activity in kids is about finding creative ways to get moving that work for your family and your busy lifestyle. Physical activity does not have to be complicated or costly to be effective.

Active Kids, Healthy Life: Understanding Physical Literacy

From a very early age, kids use exploratory movements to build the pathways between the brain and the body, which aids the development of basic motor skills. Just like the reader who strengthens her skills through practice, children build motor patterns by combining agility, coordination, balance, and body awareness; the more they practice, the more mature these motor skills become.

As a healthcare leader in the Baltimore/DC region, MedStar Sports Medicine proudly makes significant investments in programs that help build stronger and healthier communities.  Many people recognize MedStar Sports Medicine as the medical team of the pros (Ravens, Orioles, Capitals, Wizards, DC United) as well as the majority of our local college athletic programs (UMBC, Towson U., Loyola U., Morgan State, Coppin State, Stevenson, Goucher, CCBC), but the grand majority of athletes we work with are adult recreational athletes (weekend warriors) and kids.
