What we eat affects all the systems of the body, from how we look and feel to how well our bodies work. If you look online, you’ll find site after site tells you what you should eat and drink and what supplements to take for just about anything that ails you.
Under Fueling Athletic Performance
One of the most common mistakes I see with athletes of all kinds is under fueling. This mistake is not just eating too little food/calories or skipping meal, but it can also mean that an athlete is eating a diet that lacks balance or adequate nutrient, vitamin and mineral intake. So, for athletes I like for them to think about their diet like their training plan.
Running in Hot Weather by MedStar Health
Welcome to MedStar Health in Federal Hill! I’m Becca Schwender, physical therapist and member of the race medicine team. TasteWise Recipes in Honor of Women's History Month (and St. Patrick's Day!)
Last year, our Live. Give. Run. Foundation began partnering with a local Baltimore non-profit called TasteWise Kids. Their mission is to empower children of all ages to think about food in new ways, to explore their own sense of taste, and to realize that flavorful, nutritious food and good health go together. Through engaging programming with a fun, interdisciplinary approach, TasteWise Kids is working to foster healthy eating habits among young people, regardless of background, so they may learn to make better food choices into adulthood.
Two of Live. Give. Run.’s core goals are to support our youth and to encourage people of all ages to lead healthy lifestyles - this is why we’re so excited about what TasteWise Kids is doing.
To celebrate Women’s History Month, we wanted to share what the team of women who lead TasteWise Kids are doing! They have gathered special recipes passed down from woman to woman in an effort to grow the connections between women, food, and each other.
We encourage all our Charm City Run women to learn and cook one of these recipes with a girl or woman in your life, or to send us something your learned from an awesome lady! TasteWise Kids Executive Director Wendy Jeffries has shared the first recipe: a now three generations old recipe for Irish Soda Bread (perfect for getting ready for the Under Armour Kelly Benefits St. Patrick’s Day Shamrock 5K!). Funny enough this particular recipe all starts with an Italian grandmother who knew nothing about Irish cooking, but with love and determination this delectable St. Patrick's Day treat came to be. Check out the recipe here!
Running on Empty
I put off working with a nutritionist until it was the last thing I could think of to improve my running. Charm City Run Nutrition Program Coach and Sports Dietitian Sarah Schlichter and I actually exchanged emails months before I decided to move forward. I wasn’t sure, at that time, I could change. I’m pretty stubborn about certain things, and food has always been one of them. My friends and family actually used to call me “Picky Nicky” because of how particular I was about what I would eat growing up.
Change Your Mind, Change Your Body: Healthy habits for running and general lifestyle that will last beyond 2022
As we enter the holiday season, you may have started to hear people talking about New Year’s resolutions. For many people, these resolutions tend to focus on health, wellness, exercise, losing weight, or changing their body in some way. While focusing on health and wellness is a fabulous motivator, many times we take these resolutions to an extreme. For example, completely cutting out all desserts or sweets, or removing carbohydrates from our diet, or something that is just not maintainable for the long term.
Foundation of Sports Nutrition for Runners
Among the many things to consider, nutrition is one of the most important aspects to focus on when incorporating more exercise and mileage. Conflicting nutrition messages emerging in the media can make it very challenging to figure out what you should be doing to fuel your body without underfueling or overfueling. Here are 4 key evidence based tips for new runners to help keep you focused and energized throughout your training.
Bloom with Grace - Gardening Tips for Runners
Running and gardening are very similar. In Spring we plant all our seeds with big anticipation of what Summer will look like. It is a lot of work, but once June and July come around and we are picking fresh fruits and vegetables out of our yards everyday, we realize it was well worth the hard work and patience.
Ring in 2021: Fuel with a Purpose
How to Finalize your Fueling Plan for the Half & Full Marathon
As we head into fall race season, now is the time to finalize a strong game plan for fueling, because all that training won’t serve you if there’s no gas in your tank. Your training runs serve as your testing lab for nutrition, so now is the time to test (and test and test!) your options and to answer these questions in the final weeks of your training.
