Whoever said running from your problems doesn’t solve them probably wasn’t running fast enough. It may not be effective in solving them, but running in general usually makes problems seem significantly easier to work through. At least, easier than the act of forcing your body to run a certain distance or time.

Running has been a big part of my life since my first year of cross country in seventh grade. It started out as just a twice-weekly thing with my friends in the fall, with a little summer running, and in high school it grew to six days a week in the fall and much more off-season running. Since then, it’s been my favorite way to exercise, and one of my favorite ways to relieve stress.

Mary’s Running Club - A Unique Pandemic Adventure

When the Pandemic hit, there wasn’t a lot we had control over. Schools were shut down, sporting competitions were canceled, and places of work were closed. It seemed as though everything was changing and there was nothing we could do about it. But I found the one thing in my life I could control was my fitness.

7 Things I Learned While Training for the Houston Marathon

7 Things I Learned While Training for the Houston Marathon

I went to Houston a little more than a month ago and ran a 2:54 marathon. I'll save you the blow-by-blow recap, but know that there were big, ugly tears at that finish line. As someone who didn't really know what a BQ was until 2017, I never dreamed I'd be fortunate enough to be where I am now. I certainly never thought I'd have found something that, despite being purely a hobby, has such a profound place in my 31-year-old life. Here are 7 (10 was too conventional) things I learned this Fall.

Shopping Local Matters (and not just to The Levinsons)

Shopping Local Matters (and not just to The Levinsons)

A year ago, my middle kid Lucy (14) was campaigning hard for an after-dinner ice cream at The Charmery in Hampden.  Like any responsible family, we are always trying to monitor our dessert intake with little success.  When she noticed me wavering, she grabbed the dagger and went for the jugular.  “Come on dad, it’s local!”

While this is a poor example of the importance of shopping local, it does reflect on the “local” zealots the Levinsons are.  Why?  Certainly, shopping local is not always easy or convenient.

Insider’s Guide to the Komen Maryland Race for the Cure

Insider’s Guide to the Komen Maryland Race for the Cure

The 25th Annual Komen Maryland Race for the Cure has a new location this year at Baltimore’s McHenry Row on October 15. Through events like the Race for the Cure, Komen Maryland has invested $38 million in local community breast health programsand national research.

But our work is not over. 1 in 8 women in the U.S. will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime and 5,250 women in Maryland will be diagnosed this year. Maryland has the 6th highest breast cancer death rate in the country.

Please join us and turn awareness into action at www.raceforthecure.org/baltimore

The Race for the Cure is much more than a 5K! It’s a morning to celebrate survivors, honor those living with breast cancer and remember those we have lost to the disease. It’s a day filled with inspiration, emotion and fun.

Active Kids, Healthy Life: The case for bringing back the fun

This guest post was written by our good friend Josh Billings, PT, MPT, and the Medstar Sports Medicine Running Program Coordinator and Regional Director.

As a healthcare leader in the Baltimore/DC region, MedStar Sports Medicine proudly makes significant investments in programs that help build stronger and healthier communities.  Many people recognize MedStar Sports Medicine as the medical team of the pros (Ravens, Orioles, Capitals, Wizards, DC United) as well as the majority of our local college athletic programs (UMBC, Towson U., Loyola U., Morgan State, Coppin State, Stevenson, Goucher, CCBC), but the grand majority of athletes we work with are adult recreational athletes (weekend warriors) and kids.
