10 Items You Should Pack If You're Running the Across the Bay 10K

So you registered for the Across the Bay 10K. Maybe you’ve done it for the past 3 years and are looking forward to earning your next interlocking medal. Or maybe you’re training with Charm City Run to race across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge for the first time. Regardless of your experience level, there are a couple of must-have items you’ll want to pack for before, during and after your 10K race so you can #BeatTheBridge this November.

For before the race:

1. Electrolyte Hydration

Make sure you are properly hydrated before you reach the starting line! An electrolyte drink the morning of your race is a great way to make sure you feel strong from start to finish. Sip in the car as you drive to the race or pack to have race day morning in your hotel. Our favorites include nuun and Motive Pure.

2. A positive attitude

Get ready to have a great race! Positive self talk will make a huge difference as you prepare to toe the starting line. Think about how hard you’ve worked, tell yourself how much fun you’re going to have running across the Bridge or, if all else fails, envision the pride (and relief) you’ll experience as you finally cross that finish line.

For during the race:

3. Waterbottle, hydration belt or hydration vest

The Across the Bay 10K is a cup-less race and while there are refill stations along the route, it’s up to you to bring your own hydration vessel. Most runners will opt for a handheld water bottle, hydration belt or hydration vest. Check out your options now and start training with what you plan to use on race day.

4. Maryland-Themed Running Apparel

Sport your state pride with Maryland gear! The Across the Bay 10K is the perfect race to show off your favorite Maryland flag socks or Charm City Run logo top. Get your Maryland, Baltimore and CCR apparel ready to run the Bridge in style!

5. Wind breaker or other outer layer

Running the bridge can make for a windy race so prepare accordingly. Plan to wear a lightweight running windbreaker, quarter zip running jacket or long sleeve shirt. Weather can be iffy in early November so check the forecast leading up to the race so you know how many layers to pack. Bonus points if your outerwear doubles as Maryland pride apparel!

6. Smile

While you’re bound to be smiling the entire race, make sure to show your enthusiasm when you see a photographer along the course so you can be achieve the ultimate race day photo. And when you receive your medal at the finish line, definitely smile big so you can document that you #BeatTheBridge.

For after the race:

Be prepared! This year, you can once again check your bag before race day at any Charm City Run location (Click here for more info!). Beat the crowds and make sure you have what you need once you get over that bridge. We suggest including:

7. Wipes and/or a small towel

You’ll be ready for a quick refresh after sweating for more than 6 miles. Add a pack of Power Shower Wipes to your gear check bag so you can feel (slightly) cleaner as you hang out post-race. A small towel can also help you dry off. As soon as you clean off, you’ll be ready for our next item on the list.

8. Extra layers

After you proudly place your medal around your neck and take a few sips (or gulps) of water, you’ll want to grab your gear check bag that you dropped off a Charm City Run location earlier in the week. As your body starts to cool down, you’ll want to layer with a sweatshirt or running jacket and comfortable pants. You will thank yourself for planning ahead when you feel warm and cozy during your post-race celebrations and on your drive home.

9. Comfortable shoes and/or socks

Your feet want to be as comfortable and dry as the rest of your body! Slip a lightweight pair of shoes and socks or sandals into your gear check bag. Your feet will appreciate the instant relief. Wearing Superfeet, Olukai or HOKA One One sandals is also a great way to get a jump start on your recovery process.

10. Recovery snack and/or drink

Once you’ve refreshed and thrown on warm layers and comfortable footwear, it’s time for a post-race treat! Unopened, packaged foods are allowed in your gear check bag so include your favorite recovery bar or electrolyte drink to fuel your runger! We love Clif bars, Honey Stinger waffles and UCAN snack bars.
