Imagine a world where you could do whatever you want whenever you wanted to without having to worry about other plans? Wouldn’t that just be the best thing ever?! Well, as we all know, that’s not the life most of us live, and instead, we constantly find ourselves overwhelmed by our schedules, or sacrificing other plans we may have in place of work or school. I don’t need to tell any of you how tough it can be, and in my case, I found it particularly difficult to find time for working out last semester. Between school and work, any free time I had automatically went to homework, and I grew pretty fed up with it after a while.
"Why I Run" by Ian Johnston
I write this blog post having not been able run in over two weeks...
The short answer to the question is to be fit and healthy. However, I have suffered through some low back issues lately, and thus been forced to keep the Brooks in the closet.
The longer version has changed throughout the years but at the end of the day I think of running as a very selfish pursuit. It’s selfish in the sense that I am trying to accomplish something. I am trying to run a certain distance, I am trying to clear my head before or after a long day of work. It can mean so many different things to me, just depending on the day and time, but in the end, it’s all about me! Selfish, but I like to think of it as selfish in a good way.

Frederick Runner of the Month: Javier Montenegro (March 2016)
This runner of the month is someone you can see around Frederick pushing his beloved orange stroller (and son, of course). Javier Montenegro has never shied away from a challenge. Conquering different distance triathlons to pushing an extra 55 lbs of baby + stroller up and down the “rolling hills” of Frederick. He is always ready to help fellow runners who have lovingly nicknamed him Coach Javier. Although Javier has had a rough couple of months with the cancer diagnosis of his father, he has found an appreciation and love for the trails and running family who continue to help him through the difficult times.
An Interview with Dave Berdan, 2015 Baltimore Marathon Champ
Dave Berdan was the Baltimore Marathon Champ in 2015 and 2013 and when Under Armour was still recruiting International competitors in 2011 he finished tenth in 2:21. I should also mention that ALL performances were completed with a torn labrum above his femur as it enters the hip socket. Thanks to our friends Dr. Sedgley and Dr. Keller at Medstar, Dave is on the mend, but not running much these days.
"Why I Run" by Annie Truax
While my pace and distance logged may have changed since I first started considering myself a "runner" years ago, running has always been a constant for me, a way of pushing thru life’s curveballs.
Upon graduating from college in 2010, a bright-eyed, optimistic post-grad ready to take on my first apartment and my first "real" job, I was also fortunate enough to experience my first real heartache! Fortunate in the sense that, rather than wallowing in self-pity, somehow I decided this setback was the perfect opportunity to put the "1/2 Marathon Training Guide" I'd flipped past in SELF magazine to the test. I signed up for my first half-marathon (the Atlanta Thanksgiving Day Half Marathon) and used training as a distraction to keep me focused on moving upward and onward.
Run Happy Revolution Training: Overcoming Intimidation
I like to think I’m a pretty adventurous person. I’ve traveled Europe on my own. I try any food that is put in front of me (I even ate jellyfish once!). I have jumped off of cliffs and gone white water rafting. I’ve even opened up to a crowd of hundreds of people on a stage in the middle of Times Square. Where am I going with this? Well, naturally I was intimidated by each and every one of those moments, but the common outcome has been that overcoming the intimidation has led me to some pretty spectacular experiences in my short 22 years of living.
